A Little Man Somewhere With A Button

The clock in the hotel room is clearly for decorative purposes only.  It just... can't maintain the time.

At first it was just wrong, so I set it right.  But the next day I noticed that it was wrong again.  It occurred to me that it's probably losing power during the day and probably just doesn't have a battery.  See, the room shuts down during the day.  The card key fits into a little breaker switch thing on the wall which keeps the room powered.  (It doesn't actually carry the current, no.  It's just a switch.)  The idea is that, when you're not in the room, everything except the fridge powers down.  Makes sense, and probably saves a lot of electricity.  We should get these in the US.

So if the clock is plugged into the wall and doesn't have a backup battery, then this would be a reasonable explanation, right?  Apparently not.  Just sitting in the room for a few hours, or sleeping overnight, the clock loses its accuracy significantly.  I'm tired of setting it, so I just unplugged it and put it in the closet.  It's not needed.  It would have at least been useful as an iPod dock except that my iPhone doesn't recognize the dock.  It's probably for an earlier iPod/iPhone power setup.  (They changed the standards a couple versions ago, invalidating the charging capabilities of many devices.)

Perhaps this clock is maintained by the same little man clicking a button somewhere to tick away the seconds on those traffic lights?
