Every door has a security guard posted. Always. This doesn't surprise me at, say, the 7-11. I've been to 7-11s where that sort of thing is prudent. But they're everywhere here. Every door at every business. Maybe it's mandated? I don't know.
The lobby to the office building, which is probably along the same lines of every other office building lobby or bank lobby here I'm assuming, also has metal detectors. I don't mind metal detectors. My high school had them. What's uncomfortable is the fact that I invariably set them off. The change in my pocket, my belt, hell even the metal in my leg might be setting these off. (It doesn't at airports, but I'm not an expert in metal detector types and technologies so for all I know these ones are triggered by it.)
And the security guards? They don't care. I walk with purpose, I know where I'm going, (and, let's face it... I'm a white guy), so they just wave me on. I stop for a moment to show them some metal, such as the change in my pocket, to try to indicate to them that I'm not somehow a threat to the building. But they really don't care.
